Christmas Surprise: Hive-CM8 Leaks More Pirated DVD Screeners

At the end of the year movie industry insiders traditionally receive their screener copies, which they use to vote on the Oscars and other awards.

As is tradition, quite a few of these advance screeners will leak on various pirate sites. In recent years one group has drawn quite a bit of attention, due to both the timing and volume of their releases.

Hive-CM8 appear to have good sources and often manage to get their hands on many prominent screeners, which are gradually released to the public.

This year it started with “I Love You, Daddy,” which was dropped by the distributor after Louis C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct. Following two weeks of silence, the second release followed on Christmas Eve when “Last Flag Flying,” an American comedy-drama film, appeared online.

The timing is once again carefully chosen. Hive-CM8 specifically notes that it prefers to avoid releasing on Christmas Day, but it nonetheless used the opportunity to wish people a Merry Christmas.

“We decided to make one [release] before Christmas, not on Christmas we are the nice ones. In this spirit, Merry Christmas and stay tuned,” the release notes read.


The ‘stay tuned’ part suggested that more were coming, and this was indeed the case. Just a few hours ago three additional screeners were posted online, and quickly made their way to public pirate sites.

Screener copies of “I, Tonya,” “Lady Bird,” and “Call Me By Your Name” are now widely available online. Interestingly, it was still Christmas in parts of the world when they came out, but apparently not where Hive-CM8 are.

The group again wishes its ‘followers’ a Merry Christmas but also adds that people should see these movies on the big screen to support the filmmakers. The screener releases are mostly for those who are not in the position to do so, they add.

“What a nice release after Christmas. Merry Christmas to everyone, from me and TiTAN. Don´t forget watching a Screener is not like the real thing, you should still all go to the cinema and support the Producers,” the release notes read.

“We are especially sharing this for the people who cant visit the cinema due to illness, or because it is a limited release that doesn’t make it to their country. So those people also can experience some award nominated movies..Enjoy.”


If previous years are any indication, the leaks won’t stop at five screeners this year. And indeed, Hive-CM8 suggests that they have many more screeners in their possession. There are still a few missing though, including Downsizing, Hostiles and Phantom Thread.

“We are still missing Downsizing, Hostiles, and Phantom Thread. Anyone want to share them for the collection? Yes we want to have them all if possible, we are collectors, we don’t want to release them all,” they write.

While not all screeners will come out, more are likely to follow during the weeks to come. Thus far Hive-CM8 has only given one guarantee: they’re not going to upload “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

There’s seemingly a cryptocurrency out there for everything these days, including Titcoin for the adult entertainment industry, Potcoin for the cannabis industry and Legends Room for Las Vegas gentleman’s clubs.

But while some of these cryptocurrencies may have limited long-term utility, the IOTA Foundation has partnered with a number of heavy hitters in the tech industry to launch a cryptocurrency specifically designed for the Internet of things.

Tangle Angle

The IOTA currency is unique thanks to its blockless “tangle” ledger system, which has no limit on how many transactions can be confirmed per second. Tangle will help companies handle the imminent rise in micropayments that will accompany the IoT boom, according to IOTA mathematician Serguei Popov. 

“The tangle naturally succeeds the blockchain as its next evolutionary step, and offers features that are required to establish a machine-to-machine micropayment system,” Popov recently wrote

No Need For Fees

IOTA is based on the idea that the microfees associated with bitcoin and other cryptocurrency transactions that serve to incentivize mining — and transaction validation — will become unfeasible as the number of IoT micropayments skyrocket. Since IOTA requires no mining to validate transactions, transaction fees are unnecessary.

The aim of IOTA and its partners, which include Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and PricewaterhouseCoopers, is to provide IoT participants an easy, fast and safe way to exchange, buy and trade datasets. The more devices and companies become connected on the IoT, the more data there will be available on demand. Millions of sensors are constantly collecting data, most of which sits unused but could potentially be useful and valuable in certain situations.

Room For Growth

BG Perspectives estimates that business-to-business spending will grow to be a $267-billion market by 2020, and IOTA could play a central role in that expansion.

Since its November launch, IOTA has flown mostly under the radar while bitcoin and Ethereum capture most of the headlines. But IOTA has now quietly grown to a market cap of nearly $14 billion, making it the sixth-largest cryptocurrency in the world.

Will 2018 Be the Decisive Year for the Internet of Things?

The run-up to Christmas isn’t really the ideal time to release a report setting out the state of the Internet of Things market or the current situation with connected cars technology. For most people in that period, the only interest in connected devices is whether the drone they’ve bought for their teenage son is working properly.

But the Analysys Mason report on the state of these markets, the snappily titled, Predictions for IoT: Investments in NB-IoT, LTE-M and new capabilities prepare operators for an active 2018, makes for interesting reading. In many ways, there has been a huge amount of activity in 2017 but, according to the research firm, that’s what makes 2018 so interesting. “The billion-dollar acquisitions or contract wins of previous years have been absent in 2017. That said, telecoms operators have been building out IoT connectivity networks, adding capabilities and working with the broader ecosystem. All of which should set the market up for an active 2018.” says the report.

One of the big questions facing the IoT market is what connectivity technology is going to be used. And here Analysys Mason sees a big split. In China, the drive is towards Narrowband IoT (NB IoT): it’s the technology that’s being supported by all three national operators and the government.

In the US, on the other hand, much of the impetus is towards LTE-M, where it’s being rolled out by AT&T and Verizon.

But, predicts Analysys Mason, there will be a change here. It sees Verizon as looking to support both technologies. For report co-author Tom Rebbeck, this is not a seismic shift in policy. “It’s not a big deal to support both technologies, it adds maybe 20% to the production costs.” The report points out that Telia is also supports both technologies. As Rebbeck points out, that’s a small price to pay to able to support global technologies. Analysys Mason does predict, however, that no firm will be launching both technologies at the same time — there’ll be one first.

One technology that’s not mentioned in the report is LORA, a third option for connecting IoT devices. Rebbeck says that this is a technology that’s stronger in Europe — particularly France, Switzerland and the Netherlands — rather than in the US or China. “Although,” he says, “there are pockets of LORA in other parts of the world: Dr Peng is doing things with LORA in China as is Comcast in the US.”

What is going to be interesting is to see how the operators react. We’ve already seen that Verizon is likely to be offering both but other providers could well take alternative approaches. “We could see different operators taking different strategies, whether that’s narrowband IoT or LTE-M or what,” he says. “This gives them a point of differentiation as it’s going to be hard to differentiate on price — this is a low-cost business.”

But, as he points out, there may be some specific elements in this. “Take the Apple series 3 watch, there’s a possibility that this will support LTE-M. If it does: that what would give an operator who promotes LTE-M a short term benefit.” However, this is not a likely outcome; as the report points out “This is a stretch given the status of the technology at the end of 2017, but LTE-M will support voice and streaming music (arguably a more important use case than voice) and uses lower-cost modules and, crucially, provides better battery life. In many countries, at least one operator will support LTE-M by mid-2018. An Apple Watch on LTE-M is not likely in 2018, but it is possible.”

While it’s not about costs, there are some differences between the technologies. “There are some differences, LTE-M carries voice, for example,” says Rebbeck. “While NB IoT is cheaper and has a longer battery life. LORA is even cheaper and has an even longer battery life.” He says that this is causing a problem for manufacturers who need to decide what technology to support. “There will be consumer electronics manufacturers who are delaying an investment decision because they want a technology.”

But, he says, this indecision about what technology to support is not redolent of the battle between VHS and Betamax in the consumer electronics space. “They’re both variations of LTE and they’re going to co-exist,” he says.

Connected Automotive

The report also draws attention to the battle between LTE-M and NB IoT in the connected automotive market, where there’s a competition between cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) and 802.11p technology.

However, in this instance, this is not so much an issue that’s going to be decided by the providers, this could well depend on some state intervention. As the report points out, “Much attention will be on the European Commission and whether it decides to mandate V2X. A decision either way could have a significant impact on the success of either the LTE-derived C-V2X technology or the 802.11p standard.”

As Rebbeck explains, the EU would have other governments on their side — the US and China governments have already announced their support of 11p.

So, while we wait to see what the market decides on IoT technology, it looks like state intervention could be deciding factor in the connected automotive world. It will certainly be interesting to see which one stimulates the market to the greatest degree.

Internet-connected devices are nearly ubiquitous, with computer circuitry now found in a variety of common appliances. They can include security cameras, DVRs, printers, cars, baby monitors and refrigerators — even “smart” light bulbs and clothing. Collectively those devices are called the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things is a big, juicy target for criminals. Up to one million devices were hijacked to create the Mirai botnet which was used to extort companies and bring a university computer system in New Jersey to its knees. The botnet was later exploited to bring down vast swaths of the internet in a sustained attack on Oct. 21, 2016.

Paras Jha, a former Rutgers University student, pleaded guilty Dec. 8 with two other men who admitted they wrote the Mirai code. Named after an obscure anime film character, Mirai scoured the internet for unsecured devices and easily found them.

Once discovered, the Internet of Things devices were hijacked by the Mirai malware and became part of a botnet that launched assaults on internet service providers and scores of websites. Jha, 21, allegedly monetized the botnet by demanding ransom to call off the attacks, using it to inflate the number of advertising clicks on websites, and renting it out to other hackers for their own nefarious ends.

The attacks on Rutgers’ computer system may have cost the school $9 million, prosecutors said. Rutgers officials told the cost of enhancing security was one of the reasons the school hiked tuition in 2016.

When Jha discovered federal investigators were closing in, he released the Mirai source code to the world to cover his tracks. The code is still circulating online and causing damage, according to Brian Krebs, of

Krebs advises taking these precautions to keep your Internet of Things devices protected:

•Avoid connecting your devices directly to the internet.

•Change the default credentials to a complex password that only you will know and can remember.

•Check the defaults, and make sure things like UPnP (Universal Plug and Play, which can easily poke holes in your fire wall without you knowing it) are disabled.

Mozilla Patches Critical Bug in Thunderbird

Mozilla issued a critical security update to its popular open-source Thunderbird email client. The patch was part of a December release of five fixes that included two bugs rated high and one rated moderate and another low.

Mozilla said Thunderbird, which is also serves as a news, RSS and chat client, the latest Thunderbird 52.5.2 version released last week fixes the vulnerabilities.

The most serious of the fixes is a critical buffer overflow bug (CVE-2017-7845) impacting Thunderbird running on the Windows operating system. The bug is present when “drawing and validating elements with angle library using Direct 3D 9,” according to the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory.

“A buffer overflow occurs when drawing and validating elements using Direct 3D 9 with the ANGLE graphics library, used for WebGL content. This is due to an incorrect value being passed within the library during checks and results in a potentially exploitable crash,” Mozilla wrote.

The same critical vulnerability (CVE-2017-7845) was reported and patched earlier this month in Mozilla’s Firefox web browser. That issue was resolved in Firefox 57.0.2, released on December 7.

The two security issues rated high were CVE-2017-7846 and CVE-2017-7847. The first is described as a flaw in Thunderbird’s RSS reader. “It is possible to execute JavaScript in the parsed RSS feed when RSS feed is viewed as a website, e.g. via ‘View -> Feed article -> Website’ or in the standard format of ‘View -> Feed article -> default format’,” Mozilla said.

In the case of the second high-severity vulnerability, “crafted CSS in an RSS feed can leak and reveal local path strings, which may contain user name,” they said.

The remaining moderate (CVE-2017-7848) and low (CVE-2017-7829) vulnerabilities are a RSS bug and a bug impacting email.

“It is possible to spoof the sender’s email address and display an arbitrary sender address to the email recipient. The real sender’s address is not displayed if preceded by a null character in the display string,” wrote Mozilla regarding the low-level vulnerability.

The attention to Firefox comes just as Mozilla has announced plans to update Thunderbird’s codebase. Earlier this year Mozilla said it would update Thunderbird’s UI, code and align it more closely with Firefox by phasing out support for legacy add-ons built on the XUL and XPCOM APIs.

In such a scenario, the collaboration between these two behemoths makes a lot of sense as the synergies between these two companies may help them in gaining efficiencies. Intel is expected to provide AMD with vital financial resources while AMD will furnish Intel with its superior GPU expertise.

The collaboration with AMD opens a new chapter for Intel as both the companies are widely considered to be competitors in the market. However, despite their much hyped rivalry, these companies have more to gain from each other by joining hands. While the companies compete with each other in the chip segment, their core competencies are in the different sub-segments. Intel, on account of its gigantic presence in the chip segment, dominates all the sub-areas while AMD is mainly concentrated in the lower end of the market, with more emphasis on providing chip power to products with smaller computing footprints. However, this also enables AMD chips to be more efficient in terms of power consumption, making them highly suitable for portable devices. This competency can prove to be highly lucrative in upcoming fields such as IoT and smart devices. Intel thus stands to benefit from its latest collaboration with AMD.

The move is expected to provide a solid boost to Intel’s presence in the market, and ultimately give a push to its stock price. The move underscores Intel’s interest in augmenting its position in the graphics market as it recently also announced the appointment of AMD’s Raja Koduri as the new senior vice president of its newly minted Core and Visual Computing group. Intel also has its eyes firmly set on artificial intelligence and ML segments and gaining edge in this market is impossible without a solid grip on GPUs. Koduri is known for his role in turning around AMD’s sagging fortunes in the market and bringing it back to the front of the market. It is expected that he would be able to achieve the same feat for Intel as well. Apart from this, the addition of a new product line to the company also will help in providing a spark to its stagnating revenue figures, which showed marginal year-over-year growth of 2 percent in the third quarter of 2017. Overall, the company’s latest collaboration, along with its revived focus on future oriented segments such as AI, signals good things ahead for the company stock.

According to Intel’s recent presentation at the UBS Global Technology Conference, the chip major is transforming from a PC-centric to data-centric approach for its product line. Data is the key to AI and ML or Deep Learning as Intel puts it. These technology models have reached acceptability in the market, and the company foresees the $49B market of 2016 growing to $69B by 2021. Demand for custom CPUs from Intel has increased from 18% in 2013 to 49% in 2017. This is where the synergy with AMD will be useful to the company.

Processor Growth to Continue

While Intel is looking to gain a foothold in futuristic segments such as AI, ML, IoT and so on, it is still performing solid in its niche processor market, which also is seeing quite a few dramatic changes. The company recently introduced a new portfolio of processors under the Kaby Lake Refresh moniker. The new chips are mainly a refresh of their earlier Kaby Lake processors. It is rumored that the company will be introducing a further advanced range of processors called Whiskey Lake in 2018. The details about the Whiskey Lake processor are still patchy, but the rumors underscore the fact that Intel is not resting on its laurels and is continuously pushing forward with new developments.


The biggest threat to Intel is the fast-changing nature of the market it works in. However, the company has managed to stay ahead of the competition on the back of several advantages it has such a prominent position, financial muscle and core competencies. It needs to gain similar strength in upcoming markets as well. Currently, it seems to be struggling in these new fangled markets such as AI and ML. A pertinent example in this case is Nvidia Corporation (NVDA), which has already developed sophisticated tools for self driving cars. While Intel is now looking to fill the gap with its new AMD collaboration, the results are yet to be seen and Nvidia will, in any case, have the first mover advantage. On the other hand, Intel still boasts of superior technological reservoir and financial strength, which may help in giving tough challenge to Nvidia.

Investment Thesis

Overall GPU shipments increased 9.3% from last quarter. Shipments of graphics add-in boards that use discrete GPUs also increased 29.05% from last quarter. 39.55% of PCs had discrete GPUs, an increase of 4.18%. AMD increased 8%, Nvidia increased 30% and Intel increased 5%. The increase is attributed to rising demand in gaming and cryptocurrency. That helped AMD and Nvidia gain market share, but Intel market share decreased. Intel’s collaboration with AMD will allow it to gain from the rising demand.

Intel stock performed well with over 22 percent growth in the past 12 months. However, most of this growth accrued in the past three months, which accounted for 20 percent increase in its stock value. Intel is a well-established stock with a strong dividend yield of 2.45 percent. While this mature stock is not a likely candidate if you are looking for a multi-bagger, it is a solid addition to any medium to long-term portfolio. Apart from its new collaboration and upcoming new products, Intel also is likely to benefit from tax reform, which is widely considered to be pro-corporate.
