The impact of the internet of things is not yet as big as many market participants were expecting. At least if you take a recent study sponsored by IBM and ARM into consideration. One of the major obstacles for IoT implementation executives are concerned with is the practical implementation. While high costs have proved a major hindrance, one might also ask if the way the IoT industry is selling its products and services could also be a problem.

If you’ve been to one of the many IoT conferences, you’ve probably heard that phrase that “data is the oil of the 21st century”. That is probably why manufacturers of IoT technologies think they should offer closed systems that rely on a cloud that nobody else can touch.

Let’s take a smart home system, for example. You’ll find many technologies for a “smart living” experience, ones for smart lighting, smart heating, smart gardening, smart kitchen, smart surveillance and so on.

Closed systems won’t be successful

Yet, while each solution provider might be an expert in his specific field with outstanding products, closed systems are not what customers want. They don’t want to install a new gateway for each system that talks to its own cloud and uses its own app. One for the lighting, one for the heating, the next for the robotic vacuum cleaner and probably another one for their home security system. That jungle of different systems makes IoT installations complex, inefficient and expensive.

One cloud to rule them all

Internet giants like Amazon and Google are now making use of that technological gap by combining these systems under another cloud: their own. By introducing smart voice assistants that have become so successful, vendors of IoT products and services can’t hide away anymore and must offer support for Amazon Echo, Google Home and even Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana smart voice assistants.

Connected clouds are unsatisfying

However, with that one major cloud that connects all the other systems, smart home installations are still too complex to become a bestseller. And one major issue remains: If the network is down, the whole smart living experience is rendered dumb within a blink of an eye. Nobody seriously wants that.

Common standards that enable devices from different vendors to interact directly with each other on a local level are urgently needed. With or without an active online connection, windows need to be able to tell the heater if they are open or closed. Motion sensors still need to be able to contact the lights, shades or doors.

Devices need more ‘freedom of speech’

Making devices less dependent on their respective cloud won’t necessarily cost the solution providers a source of income in means of information. Since smart home systems will always be used for monitoring and remote-controlling purposes, that business segment won’t die.

What needs to change is that too much unnecessary data is being sent around the globe. Devices need to be enabled to talk “more freely” with other systems. A common standard that enables direct interaction will not just make IoT systems less complex, it will make them cheaper to install, easier to maintain, more secure and, last but not the least, better selling.

Google has announced their soon to be available Vision Kit, their next easy to assemble Artificial Intelligence Yourself (AIY) product. You’ll have to provide your own Raspberry Pi Zero W but that’s okay since what makes this special is Google’s VisionBonnet board that they do provide, basically a low power neural network accelerator board running TensorFlow.

The VisionBonnet is built around the Intel® Movidius™ Myriad 2 (aka MA2450) vision processing unit (VPU) chip. See the video below for an overview of this chip, but what it allows is the rapid processing of compute-intensive neural networks. We don’t think you’d use it for training the neural nets, just for doing the inference, or in human terms, for making use of the trained neural nets. It may be worth getting the kit for this board alone to use in your own hacks. An alternative is to get Modivius’s Neural Compute Stick, which has the same chip on a USB stick for around $80, not quite double the Vision Kit’s $45 price tag.

The Vision Kit isn’t out yet so we can’t be certain of the details, but based on the hardware it looks like you’ll point the camera at something, press a button and it will speak. We’ve seen this before with this talking object recognizer on a Pi 3 (full disclosure, it was made by yours truly) but without the hardware acceleration, a single object recognition took around 10 seconds. In the vision kit we expect the recognition will be in real-time. So the Vision Kit may be much more dynamic than that. And in case it wasn’t clear, a key feature is that nothing is done on the cloud here, all processing is local.

The kit comes with three different applications: an object recognition one that can recognize up to 1000 different classes of objects, another that recognizes faces and their expressions, and a third that detects people, cats, and dogs. While you can get up to a lot of mischief with just that, you can run your own neural networks too. If you need a refresher on TensorFlow then check out our introduction. This is the second AIY kit that Google has released, the first being the Voice Kit, which we also covered. That inspired our own [Inderpreet Singh] to, within just a couple of weeks, come out with his own equivalent voice kit.

Siemens is partnering with Amazon Web Services as it accelerates the rollout of its MindSphere industrial software platform, the core of its bid to dominate the market in digital factory automation.

The German group’s next version of MindSphere, to be launched in January, will run on AWS. So far, MindSphere has run on the SAP cloud, and from April it will also run on Microsoft’s Azure.

“Many customers appreciate it very much,” Siemens chief technology officer Roland Busch told reporters and analysts at a company presentation in Munich on Friday. “You have to really scale up in order to justify your money.”

MindSphere gathers data from devices, analyses the information and uses it to help customers optimise processes. Attracting a critical mass of developers to work on the platform is crucial to improving the quality of software applications.

MindSphere is one of a number of internet-of-things platforms being developed by industrial companies racing to help their manufacturing customers improve productivity, where growth has been slowing in developed countries.

The technology was thrown into sharp focus in August by Emerson Electric’s failed US$29 billion bid to buy Rockwell Automation.

The area is still in its infancy, with companies pursuing different strategies, although Siemens is generally considered to be leading the pack, helped by more than US$5 billion of acquisitions in the past two years and by arch-rival General Electric’s partial retreat as it narrows focus.

Siemens said it was targeting 1.25 million connected devices and systems by the end of its fiscal year in September, up from 1 million currently, as it expands its offering – previously focused on autos and aerospace – to cover all sectors.

The company is increasing research and development spending to over €5.6 billion (US$6.6 billion) this fiscal year from €5.2 billion last year, the lion’s share of which will go to its Digital Factory division.

Siemens says it made 5.2 billion euros in digital revenues in the year to September. It has 23,000 in-house software developers, rivalling some of the world’s biggest pure-play software companies.

General Electric is reducing investment in its Predix industrial software platform by about US$400 million this coming year to US$1.2 billion, and focusing solely on its own installed base of customers for the rollout.

Under new chief executive John Flannery, GE as a whole is narrowing its focus and shedding businesses with around US$20 billion in revenue.

GE aims to double Predix revenues to US$1 billion in 2018.

South Korea’s representative internet business body on Sunday expressed regret over the US Federal Communications Council’s landmark decision to repeal net neutrality rules that had required internet service providers to offer equal access to all web content without discrimination.

The Korea Internet Corporations Association released a formal statement citing “deep worries” over what they called negative consequences that the US FCC’s decision is expected to have on the global internet industry, including Korea’s.

Last week, the US FCC voted to dismantle net neutrality rules that were originally put in place by the former Obama administration in 2015. Without the rules, broadband providers are allowed to deliberately speed up or slow down traffic from specific websites or mobile apps.

This means that US telecom companies can legally offer preferential treatment to some internet-based services in exchange for a fee and potentially charge consumers for “fast lanes” — paid networks offering speedier, higher-quality access to certain web content.

Opponents of net neutrality argue that the concept has amounted to an undue overregulation of the telecom sector, hindering competition and investment into innovating critical broadband infrastructure.

Joining proponents of the concept, the Korea Internet Corporations Association said that the US FCC’s eradication of net neutrality could pose a negative influence on other countries upholding the concept, including Korea.

“Blindly accepting changes in the US’ telecommunications law, which are heavily affected by the US’ political environment, will hurt the foundation of Korea’s ‘fourth industrial revolution,’” the Seoul-based association said.

“Korea’s internet businesses have grown to their stature on the back of net neutrality rules. And net neutrality should continue to play a foundational role in supporting the growth of small startups entering the internet content business space.”

In addition, the absence of net neutrality rules will threaten Korea’s internet business industry by hampering innovation, while driving away startups seeking to bring next-generation internet content and services to the local market, the agency said.

So far, the Korean government appears to be unfazed by the US’ decision to repeal net neutrality. Last week, the head of telecommunications policy planning at Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT told reporters that he “believes that the US FCC’s decision is unlikely to impact Korea’s telecom regulations.”

He also noted that Korea’s internet service providers are currently required to follow net neutrality guidelines and that President Moon Jae-in has promised to strengthen net neutrality as part of his election pledge.

However, some Korean lawmakers have opposed net neutrality, calling it an outdated concept that may not be viable in the data-heavy age of ultra-fast 5G networks and the Internet of Things.

Rep. Kim Kyoung-tae of the main opposition Liberal Korea Party said during a National Assembly meeting last month that “net neutrality was an appropriate regulatory framework for a time of government-led ICT infrastructure development, and is now unfitting for the new 5G era,” according to local media reports.

Net neutrality has become a hot topic of issue worldwide over the past few years, as telecom companies have continually complained about the snowballing costs of hosting popular data-heavy web services like Facebook, YouTube and Netflix.

Net neutrality advocates argue that the guidelines are necessary for creating an equal grounds for competition in the internet content sector, where small firms are given access to the same broadband resources that the big companies have.
